Table 1 shows the data on recovery’, total cell, and differential cell counts in BALF cells. The recovery rates of SAR, IPF, and NC were 65.3 ± 4.8 percent, 52.3 ± 9.4 percent, and 66.9 ± 3.8 percent, respectively. The recovery rate of IPF was significantly decreased as compared with that of NC. The total cell number per milliliter of BALF cells of IPF was significantly high in comparison with that of NC, while there was no significant difference of the total number between SAR and NC (SAR, 2.43 ± 0.45; IPF, 3.24 ±0.54; and NC, 1.7110.37 [x 105/ml]). In SAR, with a corresponding decrease in the proportions of PAM, the proportions of lymphocytes were significantly high compared with those in IPF and NC (lymphocytes: SAR, 38.9 ± 6.5; IPF, 10.9 ± 3.1; NC, 10.2 ± 2.9; and PAM: SAR, 59.9 ± 6.4; IPF, 83.6 ± 4.0; NC, 89.5 ± 2.9 [percent]). The Levels of 2,5AS Activity in PBML and BALF Cells
We measured the levels of PBML and BALF cell 2,5AS activity in patients with IPF, with SAR, and in NC. The levels of PBML 2,5AS activity in patients with SAR and IPF (SAR, 60.2 ±18.0 and IPF, 168.2 ± 76.2 [nmol/mg/h]) were significantly high in comparison with those in NC (11.2 ± 2.3 nmol/mg/h). The levels of BALF cell 2,5AS activity in patients with SAR (246.7 ± 51.0 nmol/mg/h) were significantly increased in comparison with those in NC (83.3 ± 12.4 nmol/mg/h), whereas those patients with IPF (82.4 ± 22.4 nmol/mg/h) were not increased. In patients with IPF, the levels of PBML 2,5AS activity were higher than the levels of BALF cell 2,5AS activity, while in NC and patients with SAR, the levels of BALF cell 2,5AS activity were significantly high compared with the levels of PBML 2,5AS activity. Regarding the levels of PBML and BALF cell 2,5AS activity, there were no significant differences between smokers and nonsmokers each in NC, patients with SAR, and patients with IPF (Fig 1 and 2).
